Do you spend valuable time and energy striving to perfect all that you attempt? “Good enough” is a positive way of managing perfectionism or just getting through our daily tasks.
Achieving perfection is a myth, an unrealistic expectation, although reaching for excellence is admirable and achievable. Perfection is about appearance and what others think, where as, excellence is about doing the right thing, focusing on the reason for doing it, and achieving successful results. When we continually strive for perfection, we spend unnecessary time and energy. This holds us back from achieving our goals, and affects our mental and physical well-being, leading to burnout!
“Good enough” is about being comfortable with a result which achieves the desired, functional outcome, while accepting it may not be perfect. You need to identify what this looks like for you personally, in your own situation. Keep in mind the 80/20 rule – where 80% of the “work” is completed in 20% of the time. When additional work is no longer significantly improving the final product, it is complete, you have done enough.
By implementing the concept of “good enough”, we can ease the pressure of time, and lack of energy. This will enable us to move forward in our personal and professional lives in a more comfortable manner, reducing the possibility of burnout.
